The West Vancouver Field Hockey Club's women's section ...
|
...have 8 teams in the Vancouver Womens' Field Hockey League under the name of "VIPERS". For the 2010 / 2011 season Vipers will be fielding eight teams:
Premier ------ Vipers P
Div 1 -------- Vipers 1
Div 2 -------- Vipers 2
Div 3 -------- Vipers 3 and 4
Div 4 -------- Vipers 5
Div 5 -------- Vipers 6 and 7
The 2011 season starts the weekend of the 18th September.
The Vipers Club is comprised of the women's teams within the West Vancouver Field Hockey club. Vipers offers a continuum of recreational to competitive play for women age 14 – 60 plus.
Try-outs are held each August for all new and returning players. Players new to field hockey or individuals wishing to play on one of the recreational teams can request a team by indicating a desire to join one of the division 5 team when registering.
Note: Vipers teams are generally capped at 18 player to ensure maximum playing time and teams do fill-up quickly. Players will be placed on wait lists should a team be full.
Throughout the season, weekly practices are held to provide a structured environment for skill development and team building. Practice times are circulated when teams are established but are generally held on Wednesday nights beginning at 8:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m. at Carson Graham turf in North Vancouver (Div 2 - 5) and at Eric Hamber for Vipers P and Div 1. Games are scheduled each weekend from September through March
In addition to regular season play, the Vipers Club enters teams of interested players into 2 major tournaments; the Vancouver International Tournament in May and the Orca Festival in September. Information about these opportunities and our yearly social events are sent to all club members through email.

Teams for the 2010-2011 season are below. The executive and selecting committee spent many hours evaluating, and re-evaluating team placements this year. Vipers had one of the Div 1 teams relegated from last season to Div 2, while our Div 2 team was relegated to Div 3. This movement has forced us to juggle players and teams in the most fair and accurate way that we could. In placing you on your teams the following was considered:
- Previous commitment to Vipers, attendance at games and practices
- Your skill level
- Whether you registered on time
- The position you play
- Your attendance at tryouts (unless you notified us PRIOR to the tryout dates)

The Rules of Hockey (Jan 2007 - Dec 2008) Rules of the game can be downloaded from here (as a PDF). You can print it if you're feeling really hard-core, but it would eat a LOT of paper. http://www.fihockey.org/vsite/vcontent/content/news/0,10869,1181-144740-161956-5331-261674-news-item,00.html
FIH Umpires' Briefing (Jan 2007 - Dec 2008) This the briefing used by FIH for all international tournaments, and contains the OFFICIAL interpretations of the rules for 2007-2008. I HIGHLY recommend reading this, as it clarifies things in the rulebook that could be misconstrued (for example, circumstances under which a goalkeeper can use his/her hands to clear a ball). This is an excellent tool, and carries the same weight as the rulebook itself. Read up! (Note: this link is a direct download of a PDF file) http://www.worldhockey.org/vsite/vfile/page/fileurl/0,11040,1181-178064-195282-111129-0-file,00.pdf
Field Hockey Forum For those of you who like to use internet forums, and even those who don't, this place is brilliant. There is a specific area that deals with umpiring-related topics and covers many issues from danger (very contentious issue), to penalty corners, to progressive penalties (cards, etc.), to team umpiring etc. etc. The list goes on and on. This is a very valuable site as you get input from people from across the globe, from beginning umpires to a few FIH international umpires (including Keely Dunn, from our very own nation!).There are also further links to umpiring resources on the internet. You do not need to be a member to read the discussions, but you do to post. http://www.fieldhockeyforum.com
